As mentioned before, Activision announced that the original Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera would be shutting down on September 21, 2023, which is this Wednesday. They announced this devastating news via a tweet posted on their official Twitter account. The tweet was posted to their account on June 22, 2023. Here is the tweet that was posted to their official Twitter account:

Activision also posted a more detailed announcement to the official Call of Duty blog website with a blog post. In the blog post, they said that their reason for shutting the game down was so that they could focus on “exciting new experiences” and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. When Call of Duty: Warzone 2 was released in November 2022, Activision relaunched the original Warzone game as Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera. The game was named after it’s World War 2-inspired island map titled “Caldera.” The game was stripped back and only made playable on the Caldera map, removing the initial launch map, Verdansk. The game was also put on a temporary hiatus prior to the launch of Warzone 2.

Activision detailed in the blog post that all of the online services, inventories and player progression will be completely shut down on Wednesday i.e. September 21, 2023. They said all support for the game will be pulled back and it will no longer be available to play. One thing note to is that they assured players that all purchased content in-game would be available in Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard in the multiplayer modes only. They also said that Warzone Caldera being shut down will not have any effect on the player progression, inventory and gameplay on other maps like Al Mazrah on “the current Warzone.”

As for the timing of when the Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera servers will be shut down on Wednesday, it was not confirmed. However, we can assume that it will be the same time as when new updates, events or playlist changes and more are done. The approximate timings for when the servers will be shut down on Wednesday are given as follows:

  • 10:00 AM PST (Pacific Standard Time)
  • 1:00 PM EST (Eastern Standard Time)
  • 6:00 PM BST (British Summer Time)
  • 12:00 PM CST (Central Standard Time)
  • 7:00 PM CEST (Central European Summer Time)

Needless to say, when this announcement was made by Activision on June 22, 2023, it was not received well by the public at all. Now that the day is actually here, the publishers are sure to face a lot more backlash for their decision. From stripping the game down to completely shutting it down, players were very disappointed. The only good thing that Call of Duty players can look forward to in 2023 is the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on November 10.
