G2 vs KOI Preview: LEC 2023 Summer Group Stage

LEC Summer favorites will take on their long-time rivals in KOI for their first Group Stage series.

LEC returns with the Group Stage of the Summer Split. 8 qualified teams are playing for the Summer title and a chance to advance to the Season Finals. G2 Esports has already qualified for the event due to their win in Winter, while KOI is still fighting for their spot.

G2 vs KOI Preview

G2

G2 Esports really bounced back from their not-so-great MSI 2023. Especially Caps whose MSI performance was probably his worst stretch in recent years, but the EU’s best mid later returned to his usual form during the Summer Split. Along with Caps, the bot lane duo is the greatest strength of G2 at the moment. Hans and Mikyx rarely lose any lane, and they are either the best or second-best bot lane in the league.

Yike and Broken Blade had slower splits compared to their teammates, but it’s mostly due to expectations being high. Otherwise, they are still at the top of their roles and will give KOI a lot of trouble. One thing G2 also has over their opponents coming into this series is their draft variety, be it wacky mid picks, the Kog’Maw lanes in bot or hyper carries in the jungle, KOI needs to be ready for anything.

KOI

The magic KOI, or Rogue, once had is starting to die down. Of course, the many roster changes are part of it, but the performances of the remaining players are also an issue. Malrang’s unusual playstyle used to catch teams off guard and would give his team a lot of advantages. Nowadays he just seems to handicap himself. The same goes for Comp, who was half of the best laning bot duo in LCS last year, and he is rather quiet this Summer.

One big positive is that Larssen seems to find his form again in the last weeks. He’s been carrying this KOI team and he has always been a player to be scared of once playoffs arrive.

G2 vs KOI Predictions

KOI had a bit of a resurgence as we closed out the best of ones but they still didn’t give too much confidence with their play throughout the split. G2 Esports on the other hand is still the leading championship favorite. They should be able to get past KOI in this first series, even if it’s a hard-fought 2-1.
